Get the Facts
There are many reasons why you should make your child's vision a priority. From learning, to focus, and even overall health, having your child's eyes examined by a Doctor of Optometry is the best way to ensure they thrive in school and beyond!
1 in 4 children has a vision issue affecting their learning. Their parents don't know it, but an optometrist would.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommend that children should have at least one comprehensive eye exam before they start school, and annually thereafter, to ensure optimal vision and development.
A vision screening is not the same as a comprehensive exam with an optometrist.
Screenings can miss up to 75% of vision problems in children. Your child may ‘pass’ a school vision screening, but still have an undiagnosed vision problem. Regular, comprehensive eye exams performed by an Optometrist are the best way to ensure your child's vision and eyes are healthy.
Poor vision is often the cause of academic and behavioural issues.
Children with vision problems don't always express that they're struggling to see-- because they may not realize that their vision is not normal! Does your child turn or tilt their head when viewing objects, skip lines when reading, or squint when doing visual tasks? If so, they may be experiencing a vision problem.
80% of learning is visual!
When children have difficulty seeing the board, focusing on a picture, or keeping their place while reading, they may struggle to achieve their full learning potential. By diagnosing and addressing vision issues early in life, parents can help to minimize the educational impacts of poor eyesight.

Playing outdoors can help maintain your child's eyesight!
Children now spend less time than ever before playing outdoors, which results in less time being exposed to enough nature and sunlight.
An increase of 1 hour per day of outdoor time results in a 45% reduction in the occurrence of myopia (near-sightedness) in children.
